Generative AI Simplifies Echocardiogram Results and Engineers New Antibiotics

The GenAI Biotech Report (August 2024): Your Monthly Update of Generative AI Applications in Biotech, Pharma, and Life Sciences

Generative AI Simplifies Echocardiogram Results

A high-level overview of the study (Martin et al, 2024.)

A study by clinicians at NYU Langone Health found that a GPT4-based system (the technology behind ChatGPT) can be used to explain echocardiogram (echo) results to patients. The system analyzes doctor-written reports on a common type of echo test and generates human-friendly explanations of test results. There are many implications of this study including the reduction of clinician workload and fast and accurate explanation of test results to patients. JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging

Gen AI Engineers New Antibiotics

Scientists at The University of Texas at Austin have leveraged a Generative AI model to develop a new antibiotic based on an existing antibiotic called Protegrin-1, which is toxic to humans. This new antibiotic is already showing promise in preclinical trials. The model creates potent antimicrobial peptides that have reduced toxicity to mammalian membranes. Potential applications include designing new synthetic classes of antibiotics, especially for resistant bacteria. Nature
