The Rise of Chief AI Officers in Big Pharma

This month, Eli Lilly announced the appointment of its first Chief AI Officer (CAIO) - Thomas Fuchs. There is a growing trend in the hiring of CAIOs in Big Pharma. Pfizer appointed their CAIO - Berta Rodriguez-Hervas - back in August. Merck appointed Walid Mehanna as their Chief Data & AI Officer back in 2023. It will not be a surprise if other Pharma companies follow suit to appoint CAIOs.

Multimillion-Dollar Investments in GenAI Biotech Startups

Investments in biotech companies with Generative AI platforms dominated this month’s news:

  • Antiverse raised $4.6M to advance its Generative AI Antibody design platform and progress antibodies targeting G-Protein Coupled Receptors and Ion Channels.

  • Shift Bioscience raised $16M to advance their cell simulation Generative AI platform and accelerate the identification of safe rejuvenation genes, a fundamental step forward in the development of therapeutics, to treat age-related diseases.

  • Terray Therapeutics raised $120M to enhance its small molecule drug discovery/development Generative AI platform (tNova) and also progress internal programs into clinical trials.
